Research& Development Scientist

Career Description:
The R&D Scientist will report to the V.P. of R&D, and will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Performing research experiments to derive and validate novel clinical diagnostic assays on a variety of different platforms.
  • Authoring Technical SOPs, Validation Reports, abstracts or articles in peer-reviewed journals and similar documentation.
  • Ideally, the successful candidate for this position will have a demonstrable track record of clinical diagnostic assay development from their experience within an IVD company.
  • The R&D Research Scientist, is a bench-level position, and is expected to spend the majority of the time performing experiments, but may also have 1-2 direct reports (Laboratory Technicians).

Laboratory Skills & Techniques:
Assay Development & Laboratory Testing in one or more of the following areas:

  • Immunoassays (ELISA)
  • Molecular based assays (RT-PCR)
  • Biochemistry assays (Western blots, Southern blots)
  • Flow cytometry assays
  • Automated Analyzer (e.g. Tecan, Immulite)
  • Tissue Culture
  • HPLC assays
  • Tandem Mass Spectrometry assays.

Reagent Preparation

  • Preparation of buffers and reagents in accordance with SOPs

Additional Duties or Responsibilities

  • Maintains serum bank organization
  • Carries out research using the internet and scientific journals
  • Writes white papers
  • Prepares SOPs and assay validation documents
  • Assay optimization
  • Assay troubleshooting
Education Requirements:
Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology or related Life Sciences, as well as a minimum of two (2) years of industry experience; preferably within an Invitro Diagnostics (IVD) Company.
Must possess excellent communication skills: Written, Verbal & Computer.

Annual Compensation:
$65,000 - 80,000/Year

The Development Scientist will be responsible for the following:

  • Uses professional concepts and relationships to contribute to the development and completion of company goals and objectives in creative and effective ways.
  • Support all applicable regulations including, but not limited to, FDA and ISO requirements. Scale-up, design verification and transfer of immunodiagnostic products and processes into cGMP compliant manufacturing environment.

  • Working half of the time with the Rare Reagents Department and half of the time in the Product Development Department.
  • Must possess proven experience in Cell Culture and/or Protein Chemistry.
  • With limited guidance from an R&D scientist independently investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, laboratory services, and problems.
  • Under the appropriate setting, independently plans and executes experiments contributing to the goal of ongoing laboratory research.
  • Reviews the appropriate scientific literature and provides a summary of the findings.
  • Able to interpret data with minimal supervision derived from the laboratory research.
  • Able to interface with internal and external scientists to develop research protocols.
  • Authors all appropriate documents requiring transfer of technology to either the reference laboratory or Diagnostics divisions. These include, but are not limited to, SOP’s, experimental summaries, data analysis, transfer documents, training documents, and design control documents.
  • Under the guidance of supervisor, authors manuscripts for publication.
  • Violations of safety directives and procedures will be handled in accordance with the established Company disciplinary process.

Education Requirements:
BS or MS in Biology, Biochemistry or Life Sciences with a minimum of 3-5 years of R&D industry experience.
